When my son Karl was ten, he embarked on a grand adventure. We took him out of school and let him go with his grandmother to visit Jerusalem. He had a great time, but on the way back his grandmother became very weak. He had to take charge of getting things like luggage taken care of. Then, when they got back, we learned that she was in the final stages of cancer. Not many months later, she died.
In a virtual visit to Australia before embarking on my recent tour of the country, I consulted four classics by four well known Australians; Alan Moorehead's The Fatal Impact, Patrick White's The Vivisector, Donald Horne's The Lucky Country, and Colin Roderick's Henry Lawson. I also watched two Australian films; Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) and Australia (2008) - more about these two historical dramas in part 4.
You can reach and touch the soul of Australia by reading Henry Lawson's poems. My three favorites are: The Star of Australasia, The City Bushman and Second Class Wait Here - all written in the late 1800s. Here I share the first one because of its beauty and historical significant.
Thanks to Alan Moorehead I now know about a great Australian woman; Daisy May Bates (1859 - 1951). Moorehead in his 1966 classic The Fatal Impact talked about her life and her writings with a great admiration.
Australia has been called the largest island and the smallest continent of the world. One third lies within the tropics. It is in the Southern Hemisphere; the further North you go the hotter it gets. Their mid-summer months are January and February and their mid-winter months are July and August. Christmas is usually a very hot day quite unsuitable for turkey and plum pudding.
When it comes to its struggles against both man-made and natural disasters, Pakistan seems to have few sympathizers. The media makes little mention of the near-daily attacks on its cities and villages that kill thousands, and now Prime Minister Stephen Harper seems to be hesitating on announcing relief for Pakistan's flood victims.
Beginning with Operation Crossroads, on June 6, 1946, and ending with Operation Hardtrack I on August 18th, 1958, the United States detonated 67 atomic explosions on the Marshall Islands.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas here in Toronto. And throughout most of the world, at least some part of Christmas will be in the air, on the street or hidden in the heart. Christmas is truly global.
It is true that Christmas is largely about Jesus. It is equally true that Jesus, in Islam, is perceived very differently than Jesus in the mainstream Christianity.
Thanks to today's media technologies, some events just seem to happen 'out of nowhere' such as Egypt's June 30th popular uprising/coup. Mediatization refers to the role of the media in reporting such events and the perceptions that they create, sustain, or challenge.
