Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini made history in providing the leadership to the movement that drove the Shah from power in Iran. He made his mark in the domain of sexuality as well. Fereydoon Molkara barged into his presence and brought his tear-filled problem, that he was, as he experienced it, a woman trapped in a male body. After due consideration, Khomeini decided that there was nothing in Islamic religious texts to forbid sex change operations, and so they are available in Iran, even though transgendered individuals there in fact are apt to face persecution.

A group of nine Canadian senators has warned the United Church of Canada that it could spark a rift with the Jewish community if it approves the boycott of goods from Israeli settlements in occupied lands. One has to wonder how much concern these same senators have shown about the potential rift with other communities in Canada that face the prospect of boycotts, notwithstanding the justifications put forward.

    October 2, 2012

The General Council of the United Church of Canada in convention in Ottawa this month adopted a resolution calling for a boycott of Israeli products from the West Bank. This action has resulted in a frenzied hostility from major Jewish organizations in Canada. Frank Diamant, CEO of B'nai Brith Canada, for example, said, "The recommendations only serve to undermine the goodwill that Jewish and Christian communities in Canada have worked tirelessly to establish and maintain."

  • Upper Egypt: conservative Muslim but not extremist Prof. Dr. Mohamed Elmasry
    February 3, 2015

I strongly believe that Upper Egypt (the Sa'id) can offer the rest of the country and the world a model Muslim society that is conservative, but not extremist; traditional, but modern; humble, yet proud in the values of practical self-reliance and acceptance of others. While no society is perfect, I found that the Sa'id models so much that a healthy society can and should be - yet it is all but unknown, even to other Egyptians.
