Those of us who are associated with the truth of history as it relates to the making and sustaining of the conflict in and over Palestine that became Israel, and who call for justice for the Palestinians, now have reason to say "Thank you" to President Obama.
The headline over a recent op-ed article in the New York Times by Rashid Khalidi was "Is Any Hope Left for Mideast Peace?" The answer to that question might or might not be clear beyond dispute when the curtain comes down on President Obama's performance in Israel-Palestine. (He'll be on stage there on Wednesday for two days, mainly, it seems, to tell Israeli Jews what they want to hear, not what they need to hear).
There was one way in which President Obama's escalation speech brought significant relief to the 59% of people in this country, as well as the overwhelming majorities of people in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Middle East and elsewhere who oppose the U.S. war in Afghanistan: It was a pretty lousy speech.
It won't help him win many votes this year, but it should be noted that Barack Obama has been a good foreign policy president.
Barack Obama finally managed to get a health insurance package through Congress. It is a weak-- if voluminous-- law, with many benefits only available in 2014.
President Obama ought to have trouble sleeping at night knowing that by allowing Israel to continue its illegal settlement activity on the occupied West Bank he has made himself, and his country, openly complicit in the Zionist state' s defiance of international law. In a different America that ought to be enough to have any president removed from office.
The good news about Obama's speech on May 19 is this: it will be ignored by the new power in the Arab world; the people. Obama gets an A for staging and an F for substance. Whenever values and interests clashed he took the side of the latter. He did not comprehend the profound changes sweeping the Arab world.
Guerrilla warfare is nothing new.
President Barack Obama did it with seven words. "Ultimately the U.S. cannot impose a solution."
Is Obama a hypocrite or merely insouciant? Or is he an idiot?
