The Harper government is spending $18 billion on new state-of-the-art fighter jets. To protect us against whom?
A new McCarthyism is escalating in Canada, and a lot of Canadians are not aware of it.
A July 1st Toronto Star letter to the editor, by Dimitri N. Soudas, Director of Communications, Office of the Prime Minister, is entitled "No role in keeping media away - Re Harper helps Hu keep critics away, June 25" (Toronto Star), but this may not be the whole story. My attempt to gain access to Prime Minister Harper, at the G20, Saturday, June 26, indicates that there is a lot more to it than Mr. Soudas is letting on.
Millions of Canadians were pleased to be rid of Stephan Harper with the October 19 federal election.
Inspired perhaps by the fading echoes of George W. Bush; Stephen Harper has presented Canadians with a false choice on Middle East peace: either voice "absolute, non-negotiable belief in Israel" or be declared an anti-Semite. Stephen Harper refuses to be a real friend to the Israelis in the sense that he excuses their more objectionable behaviour for the sake of political support, business deals and misplaced guilt.
Stephen Harper told CBC's Peter Mansbridge that "Islamicism" poses the most important terrorist threat to Canada. But Islamophobia is an ongoing problem in the contemporary world, so it behooves a prime minister to choose his words carefully. Would he, if talking about Jewish settler violence, casually throw in a term like "Judeacism"?
Watching and listening to Stephen Harper's bizarre and unnerving speech about anti-Semitism and Israel raises the question as to whether or not the man is mentally fit to be prime minister.

In the November 22, 2013 edition of the National Post, Kelly McParland writes: A full-scale press is put on to get the money repaid and the issue out of the headlines. The taint is spreading and there are fears it will reach the prime minister, despite Cpl. Horton's view, as stated in the documents, that there's no evidence indicating Mr. Harper had any knowledge or involvement in the gathering mess.
"This government has turned into something nasty and mean," Peter Showler told an attentive audience at Ottawa's First Unitarian Congregation on April 18. Showler, a former chairman of the Immigration and Refugee Board and currently a law prof at the University of Ottawa, was wearing a sweatshirt with a picture of Albert Einstein and the inscription "Einstein was a refugee."
