It is just about certain that the new Republican House will hold hearings on the "radicalization of the American Muslim Community." The hearings will be called by Peter King, the Republican representative for New York's 3rd district, who is now the Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee.

  • Rae Bows OutReuel S. Amdur
    July 19, 2012

Bob Stanfield has been called the greatest prime minister Canada never had. Some are now wanting to put Bob Rae's name into competition for the title. Well, maybe, maybe not. The impulse for hagiography comes from Rae's declaration that he will not be a candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Party, of which he is now interim leader. But what is his legacy? There is little question that he is one of the best, if not the best, orator in Parliament.

It is not easy being a teen these days, nor to be the parent of a teen. Parents cannot compare what being a teen was like when they were teenagers. A big difference is the incredible impact that the social media have today. Another factor is the massive growth in the available amount of knowledge, courtesy of Google. The world of today's young people is not our world, and we cannot understand how they experience it. As Kahlil Gibran put it, "You may house their bodies but not their souls. For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams."

Is a sick child a bogus refugee? That was a question raised by Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) pediatrician Dr. Tobey Audcent, on June 16, the third national day of action called by Canadian Doctors for Refugee Care. The event was a rally on Parliament Hill. Some 350 people gathered for the rally, including doctors, nurses, social workers, lawyers, and medical students. They were there to protest against the Harper government's cuts to health care for refugees and claimants.

  • Ramadan: a meal for your brainTaufik Ali Valiante MD PhD FRCS
    June 22, 2015

Your brain is who you are. A constellation of past experiences, hopes, dreams, and knowledge, receiving input from the outside world through your senses, and simultaneously changing that very world through your interactions. It is thus shaped by, but yet shapes the world around it. It is constantly changing with every second, as every experience you have alters is physical and chemical structure. It is as mysterious to the neuroscientist as to average individual. Scientists refer to as the most complex thing in the universe, thus currently defying definition, and a scientific language to describe what it does.

    May 19, 2010

"George Bush hasn't suffered at all over the monumental suffering, death, and horror he has caused...no matter how many American soldiers have died on a given day in Iraq (averaging well over two every day), he is always seen with a big smile on his face that same or next day"
