  • Electoral politics from a moral high groundJaved Akbar
    April 7, 2011

Elections in the recent past have failed to garner much excitement among the general public, particularly the young voters. But there is much at stake at the coming elections. The Harper government's domestic to foreign policies read like the Bush Doctrine.

(Photo: Wissam Nassar / The New York Times)Gaza is a window on our coming dystopia. The growing divide between the world's elite and its miserable masses of humanity is maintained through spiraling violence. Many impoverished regions of the world, which have fallen off the economic cliff, are beginning to resemble Gaza, where 1.6 million Palestinians live in the planet's largest internment camp. These sacrifice zones, filled with seas of pitifully poor people trapped in squalid slums or mud-walled villages, are increasingly hemmed in by electronic fences, monitored by surveillance cameras and drones and surrounded by border guards or military units that shoot to kill. These nightmarish dystopias extend from sub-Saharan Africa to Pakistan to China. They are places where targeted assassinations are carried out, where brutal military assaults are pressed against peoples left defenseless, without an army, navy or air force. All attempts at resistance, however ineffective, are met with the indiscriminate slaughter that characterizes modern industrial warfare.

  • Empires then and nowPaul Craig Roberts
    April 19, 2012

Great empires, such as the Roman and British, were extractive. The empires succeeded because the value of the resources and wealth extracted from conquered lands exceeded the value of conquest and governance. The reason Rome did not extend its empire east into Germany was not the military prowess of Germanic tribes but Rome's calculation that the cost of conquest exceeded the value of extractable resources.

"You don't want me!" cried the child, dropping her worn-out suitcase. "You don't want me because I'm not a boy! I might have expected it! Nobody ever did want me. Oh, what shall I do? This is the most tragical thing that ever happened to me! I'm going to burst into tears."

    April 28, 2010

The European Union and the United States have not put enough pressure on Israel to end the siege of Gaza.
