  • The rise of Christian nationalism in CanadaThe Canadian Charger
    May 19, 2010

Few Canadians are aware that a militant band of conservative Christians, with a direct pipeline to Harper's cabinet, is also attempting to reshape the country's social, cultural and even scientific policies, according to Marci McDonald, author of the recently released book The Armageddon Factor: the Rise of Christian Nationalism in Canada.

  • The Rise of ISIS and Other Extremist Groups: the role of the West and Regional PowersBouthaina Shaaban
    February 19, 2016

This essay examines the role of Western and regional players (i.e. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar) in inflaming the conflict and the growth of terrorism in Syria. It examines the attempts to break up Syria's civilian and military institutions, the delegitimization of the Syrian government, the attempts to procure a UN mandate for a military intervention in Syria, the imposition of suffocating economic sanctions on Syria, and most importantly the support that Western and regional powers gave to a plethora of armed groups, including al-Qaeda and ISIS, to fight the Syrian government. The latter point is scrutinized in order to highlight how the United States, and its allies in the region, cynically employed extremist groups in Syria to achieve geopolitical gains, thus leading to wider regional upheaval, the effects of which will most certainly go beyond the West Asia region.

Many observers would be surprised at the pivotal role Canada played in the partition of Palestine and the creation of Israel. Ivan Rand who was a retired Canadian Supreme Court Justice played a critical role in getting the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) to recommend partition into a "Jewish State" and an "Arab State" over a unified Palestine. A unitary Palestine would have approximately one third Jewish population and two-thirds Arab population and based on the actual demographics of the country.

    August 7, 2012

Once upon a time, early in the previous century, a line in the sand was drawn, from Acre to Kirkuk. Two colonial powers - Britain and France - nonchalantly divided the Middle East between themselves; everything north of the line in the sand was France's; south, it was Britain's.

    October 8, 2013

Last summer, Vladimir Putin has, it seems, let the air out of President Barack Obama's balloon. Obama was carefully attempting to craft support at home and abroad for a limited action against Bashir al-Assad, to punish him for unleashing chemical weapons on his own citizens. However, Putin proposed, and Assad agreed, that all Syrian chemical weapons would be put under international control.
