Canadian Muslim, Arab and Palestinian Liberal Party supporters call for reconsidering their communities' endorsement in next Federal Election

Whereas Muslims, Arabs and Palestinians represent more than 4 million Canadians (10% of the population);

Whereas Canadian Muslims, Arabs and Palestinians have traditionally voted Liberal;

Whereas the current Liberal government has avoided censuring Israel’s war on Palestine or calling for a permanent ceasefire, compared with its unqualified denunciation of Russia’s war against Ukraine;

Whereas Deborah Lyons, Canada’s Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism, has offered no apology for her support of disgraced BC minister Selina Robinson’s anti-Palestinian remarks;

Whereas Ottawa has made no move to advocate for peace between Russia and Ukraine after 2 years of war, or between Israel and the Palestinians after more than 4 months of war—a role in which Canada was once a world leader;

Whereas the Trudeau Liberal government continues to support Ukraine militarily, economically, and politically against Russian aggression, this same government continues to arm and side with Israel at the International Court of Justice;

Whereas the Liberal government has failed to adhere to the core democratic principle of “innocent until proven guilty” and mercilessly cut aid to UNRWA, it has become an accessory to genocide against the 2 million Palestinians of Gaza;

Whereas the Liberal government invited Ukrainian government officials to share their political views, it has not given the same privilege to Palestinian representatives—despite the clear fact that both Ukrainians and Palestinians are victims of wilful aggression;

Leading Liberal supporters among Canadian Muslims, Arabs and Palestinians are calling on their communities to seriously reconsider their support of the Liberal Party.

Urgent calls from the Canadian Muslim, Arab and Palestinian community to meet with Prime Minister Trudeau, federal Cabinet Ministers, and Liberal MPs have all gone unanswered.

"I have asked several times for a meeting with my local MP Bardish Chagger,” but received no response," said disappointed long-time Liberal supporter, Prof. Mohamed Elmasry of the University of Waterloo.
