  • Bibles-in-schools controversy reveals both division and hopeEleanor Grant
    December 16, 2010

Gideon Bibles were part of our lives when I was a child in school 50 years ago. Even in high school, the days started with the national anthem, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Principal reading us a passage from the New Testament over the PA system. School, church, and Sunday school were a seamless web. There were hymns at school assemblies, and there were flags and prayers for the Queen in church sanctuaries.

  • Death Squads vs. Democracy: Tom Flanagan's JokeDr. Michael Keefer

Dr. Tom Flanagan, University of Calgary political science professor, right-wing pundit, and mentor and former senior advisor to Prime Minister Harper, has earned himself more international media attention during the past week than even he may have an appetite for.

  • The Dignity of the Haitian Women (and Canada's Shame)Dr. Michael Keefer
    December 8, 2010

This essay, which has not previously been published in Canada, is concerned for the most part with events that occurred between early 2004 and August 2007. It is not in any sense "news," although it may to some degree contribute to an understanding of Haiti's vulnerability to subsequent natural disasters: the hurricanes of 2008 and the catastrophic earthquake of 2010.

  • Qatar will host World Cup'22, Obama says it's a "bad decision"John Whitbeck
    December 8, 2010

(December 2, 2010) One may fairly conclude that Barack Obama's over-hyped alleged efforts to "reach out" to the Arab and Muslim worlds ended today when he responded, with a breathtaking lack of grace, to Qatar's defeat of the United States (as well as Australia, Japan and South Korea) in the competition to stage the 2022 World Cup by branding the decision by the FIFA executive committee a "bad decision."

  • Margaret Wente, paid to be meanProf. Dr. Mohamed Elmasry
    December 8, 2010

In her column on November 30, Margaret Wente, of Toronto's Globe and Mail newspaper, praised Australia for telling immigrants that "if they miss their elderly parents, they should buy a plane ticket home," instead of allowing them - as the case in Canada - to use "a family reunification program." She praised Australia again by saying that "language competence is so essential to immigrant success that if you can't speak English, you can't get in."

    December 8, 2010

In a speech before the Interparliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism, Prime Minister Stephen Harper delighted the delegates in talking about "Jewish students under attack," apparently referring to Israel Apartheid Week. He also took aim at "a hateful ideology. . . which targets the Jewish homeland as a scapegoat," tying this "ideology" to the slaughter in Mumbai.
