Jason Kenney and Margaret Wente, more Zionist than the Zionists

Dr. Mohamed Elmasry

Dr. Mohamed ElmasryThe more that Jews learn the truth about today's Zionism, the more they are rejecting it.

A tiny minority is speaking out and organizing in response to Israel’s crimes against humanity, such as: the siege of Gaza; aggression against Palestine, Syria and Lebanon; and pressure on the U.S. to launch a contrived, pre-meditated attack on Iran, much like the one against Iraq.

For their principled efforts, these Jews are being subjected to hatred, marginalization and bullying by the powerful majority, the Zionist lobby.

Yet the voices of these “self-hating Jews,” as the Lobby derisively labels them, can only grow stronger as Zionists of yesteryear are coming to denounce the ideology they grew up on.

Take, for example, the pioneer Zionist and Jewish Israeli peace activist Dov Yermiya:

“I, a 95-year-old Sabra (native born Israeli Jew), who has plowed its fields, planted trees, built a house and fathered sons, grandsons and great-grandsons, and also shed his blood in the battle for the founding of the State of Israel, Declare herewith

—that I renounce my belief in the Zionism which has failed;

—that I shall not be loyal to the Jewish fascist state and its mad visions;

—that I shall not sing anymore its nationalist anthem;

—that I shall stand at attention only on the days of mourning for those fallen on both sides in the wars: and

—that I look with a broken heart at an Israel that is committing suicide and at the three generations of offspring that I have bred and raised in it.

“... Israel turned what should have been Palestine into a giant detention camp, and is holding a whole people captive under an oppressive and cruel regime, with the sole aim of taking away their country, come what may!!!

“The IDF eagerly suppresses their efforts at rebellion, with the active assistance of the settlement thugs, by the brutal means of a sophisticated Apartheid and a choking blockade, inhuman harassment of the sick and of women in labour, the destruction of their economy and the theft of their best land and water.

“Over all this there is waving the black flag of the frightening contempt for the life and blood of the Palestinians. Israel will never be forgiven for the terrible toll of blood spilt, and especially the blood of children, in hair-raising quantities...”

Despite this trend among Zionist Jews, though, some Canadians are working so hard to excuse Israeli terrorism that they are more Zionist than the Zionists!

The “More Zionist than the Zionists” group includes two prominent Canadians.

The first is Jason Kenney, minister of citizenship, immigration and multiculturalism in the Harper government.

Kenny’s strategy is to deny informed dissent by claiming that condemnation of Israel amounts to “new anti-Semitism,” and to propound the myth that Israel represents Western democratic values.  During a visit to Israel in May, Kenney said:

“The existential threat faced by Israel on a daily basis is ultimately a threat to the broader Western civilization. It's a threat that comes from profoundly undemocratic forces that don’t have the same conception of human dignity or freedom, and which abuse Israel as a kind of representative of the broader West and Western liberal-democratic values

“... I also very acutely understand the nature of the new anti-Semitism, and I think it’s even more dangerous than the old European anti-Semitism ... we acknowledge that so much of the criticism Israel faces is motivated by a dangerous form of anti-Semitism that tries to hide behind anti-Zionism and is represented by a coalition of the far left in the West with extreme currents of jihadi Islam that seek the destruction of the Jewish nation. They seem to believe that the Jewish people are the only people in the world that don't have a right to a homeland.”

As a government minister Kenney is supposed to serve all Canadians, but how can Canadians trust an extreme Zionist like Kenny to be fair in dealing with citizenship and immigration issues involving Palestinians, Arabs or Muslims? How can Kenney be trusted to promote multiculturalism?

The second example is Margaret Wente, a columnist for The Globe and Mail.

In her Aug. 13 column “How Israel became South Africa” Wente insults the United Church of Canada for its decision to boycott Israeli universities, and offers up apologetics for Israeli “democracy” She concludes by saying:

“[When] someone like Naomi (No Logo) Klein says ‘Israel has been steadily escalating its criminality’ and recommends a global boycott such as the one that brought an end to apartheid in South Africa, I feel like running to the store and buying all the Jaffa oranges I can get.” (Klein is an anti-Zionist Canadian Jew.)

In a letter to the editor, Donald Grayston of Vancouver commented on Wente’s oped: “I know it's tiresome, Margaret, but you need to do more homework before writing again about Israel and its critics. Please put any future columns in the only defensible framework: justice for the Palestinians, security for Israel, peace for the Middle East.”

Why do some Canadians insist on being more Zionist than the Zionists, when an increasing numbers of Jews like Dov Yermiya are rejecting Zionism?

There seems to be one possible answer:  they are more extreme than the average Zionist Jew because they are having a strong motive for holding such an extreme position.
